Consumers have recently found a renewed interest in cottage cheese after the dairy food went viral on TikTok. Social media creators have been using cottage cheese in recipes for dips, bowls, ice cream, cookie dough, pancakes and more. The trend has gravitated to other social media networks like Instagram and has caught the attention of traditional media.
The viral moment led to a healthy bump in cottage cheese sales, too, with sales increasing around 16% year-over-year for the last four quarters for total sales in excess of $300 million across the U.S.
"We are seeing a lot of growth in the category," said Gretchen Crichton, director of industry partnerships for Dairy MAX. "There's tremendous opportunities for our processor, retail and food service partners to take advantage of the trend to appeal to Millenials and Gen Z right now."
